I continue to hear lots of talk of gloom and doom. Though the global crisis we are experiencing is economically, spiritually and environmentally very real, and surely not over, I remain hopeful for the future, as uncertain as it is. We always get what we need, not what we want. This year the starry heavens once again point the way to new paths and possibilities.

In the western (tropical) astrological system, Saturn recently moved into the sign of Libra. Saturn is in a powerful position when it is in Libra. As teacher and task master, Saturn relentlessly drives us toward greater discipline, creating structure, and establishing limits and boundaries. While in Libra this occurs in the area of relationships and human cooperation. Libra is the peace loving sign where relationships, beauty, and harmony provide the impetus toward growth and fulfillment. As Saturn travels through Libra the qualities of social responsibility and justice are pronounced. Across the board, contracts and agreements demand to be honored. On the flip side, Saturn in Libra brings on unforgiving attitudes towards others, and unrealistic commitments resulting in resentment.

This year brings us Pluto in Capricorn, Saturn in Libra, and early in the summer, Uranus nudging into the sign of Aries. These three signs of the zodiac, Capricorn, Libra and Aries, are called “cardinal” signs because they start off a new season and represent the initiation of new activity. They are enterprising and self conscious, but can also be self seeking and ruthless. Expect to see much new enterprise and innovative activity of social, scientific, and environmental nature.

Early in the year, Pluto and Saturn’s relative relationship to one another suggest another round of economic and environmental challenges. Once again, simplifying our lives and working with what is in front of us (instead of wishful thinking) in a sensible and conservative fashion will be the wisest course of action. There will continue to be power struggles over limited resources. Who is in control? How do we create balance that is fair to all and sustainable? These questions will command our attention over the coming years.

As Uranus begins his seven year journey through the sign of Aries, we can expect to blaze new trails towards toward personal freedom and individual rights. The courage to try new ways of expressing our individuality within the collective will enhance our sense of purpose and destiny. In addition, with the opposition of Saturn (the familiar, tried and true) and Uranus (revolutionary, new) squaring (conflicting) Pluto (re-birth, transformation) we must remain cautious of impulsive actions which discard the past without careful consideration.

Our dissatisfaction with present conditions is not sufficient cause for destructive action and harsh behavior. Fortunately, the inclination to individual extremes will be tempered by Saturn’s placement in Libra. While standing up for individual freedoms there will be continuous reminders of our social obligations and responsibilities. The potential for collective consciousness to reach new heights is clearly present, providing we apply self restraint and consideration for others. New technological industries and services will develop as we discover untapped resources, within and without.

During most of 2010, Jupiter will be in the sign of Pisces. Throughout this year, especially during the periods when Jupiter and Uranus share intimate heavenly space, we can expect noticeable expansion in the fields of education and science. While progressive thought will be “in”, our cultural color and differences may diminish. As we move forward, we need to acknowledge and remain faithful to our unique contributions. Though we are equal, we are not the same.

This January we will encounter the last conjuction of Neptune and Jupiter in the sign of Aquarius for centuries to come. This combination inspires fertile imagination, faith and optimism. Again, while all this is juicy and wonderful, we need to remain cautious in how we use energy for the choices we make. We must discriminate between our hopes and wishes, our fantasies, and life as it is.

Finally, we have Mars, the defensive and offensive god of war, in the fiery sign of Leo until June 2010. Mars will be in “retrograde” motion from late December 2009 to mid March 2010, appearing to travel backward and forward again in the sky. Fortunately, Mars feels at home in Leo! This sign confers leadership and confidence, and stabilizes the hot and forceful energy of Mars. Ruling the heart, Leo is dramatic, proud, passionate, and possessive. During this period we can expect keen competition and uncompromising opinions. Keeping our pride in check and giving from the heart without expectation of return will minimize conflict and ill will. This is an excellent time, abundant with opportunities, to expand our own heart, to remain humble, and to act with kindness and generosity.

Aries - Pursuing romance is once again a favorite pastime. Passion is aroused and love is in the air. Your imagination and creativity are sizzling with inspiration. Your leadership skills are best suited for working with children and young people during this period. Avoid being arrogant. Be sensitive to your partner’s needs and wishes.

Taurus - Lots of energy and activity will be expended in the home, including a terrific time to make improvements. The urge to be in control may cause quarrels with family members. Remember that when something or someone irritates us the first place to look is within ourselves. Practice healthy self restraint.

Gemini - The next several months is an excellent time to learn something new. Study, read and engage your brain. Stand up for your beliefs and share information, but remember that you are not your thoughts. Don’t take issues personally or you may find yourself in senseless arguments. Exercise your mind constructively!

Cancer - Pursue what matters to you most. Financial gain and progress can be made while maintaining harmony in the home. You may discover new talents and resources in yourself. Rejoice! Be careful of impulse spending and retail therapy this winter - worldly possessions are not a reflection of your self worth.

Leo - This is a time of abundant energy, especially if it is being used for self actualization. Projects requiring physical stamina can provide a great source of satisfaction. Promote your personal interests and don’t be afraid to fight for your rights. Now it is best to work independently and show others what you can do!

Virgo - Actively investigate your dreams and explore your unconscious depths over the next several months. It will prove rewarding. Conducting research, getting involved in volunteer service, and working alone as much as possible is most appropriate for now. Use this period for self-reflection, but don’t take yourself too seriously!

Libra - Social gatherings and activities flourish. Spending time with friends and working in group settings can be very gratifying. Establish and identify your long term goals. What steps are you taking towards accomplishing them? Now is the time to formulate a plan. Your friends can be helpful in realizing your dreams for the future.

Scorpio - Professional ambition and a desire to achieve your goals is predominant during this period. You can achieve a great deal, especially if you can do your own thing. You may even receive recognition for your accomplishments! Conflicts can arise if you are not sensitive to the needs of your co-workers and colleagues. Practice humility!

Sagittarius - The meaning of life and expanding your intellectual horizons, attracts your attention now more than usual. Though you may be tempted to share your philosophy of life and ideals, be mindful not to get pushy and bully others with your beliefs. Nature calls you, make time for a walk in the woods or a stroll in the park.

Capricorn - The intimate experiences you share with others and the resources you hold together are a central theme. Examine your motivation and position before pooling your possessions with someone. Sexual relationships can become more complex and transformative. Honest, fearless, and open discussions ease tensions. Relax!

Aquarius - Partnerships and the spirit of cooperation are central themes during the next few months. Working closely with others sounds easier than it may prove to be. Correcting over-compromising behavior will be well worth the effort. In the process you can clear the air, start fresh, and recommit to pursuit of common goals.

Pisces - You can expect a great deal of activity in the workplace and daily life. Try not to be a workaholic, your health may suffer. During this period, the services you provide are for the benefit of the whole and others, not for personal reward or accomplishment. Remember, “Before enlightenment carry water, after enlightenment carry water”.
